Chapter 12

“You did it, Widgin. You made it all the way through with no mistakes. I think you're ready.” Kathy reached over and gave him a hug. His cool amphibian skin was slightly moist from the stress of trying so hard to play his chosen song all the way through without any errors.

“Kaffy think Widgin have chance to win all school contest?” Widgin set his instrument on the bench as he lashed out his long tongue and licked one eyeball.

“As good a chance as anyone,” she said, and meant it. His playing had improved remarkably. Kathy covered the electronic keyboard, or Dicebilia, as Mirimu had called it, and reached for her coat. There hadn't been much need to wear extra clothing as of late. The old dome was warming up. If she didn’t know better, someone had turned the heat on since her flight through the Tefgie asteroids. She reminded herself to thank that someone.

“I'd better water our plant and head down to the base. I have a quick work out with Fibner Po in the zero-g building. Then I have my simulator final exam later today so I have to study.”

Widgin hopped off the bench. “High Lord General Tammaru give you your exam, Kaffy?” His usual admiration for his personal idol came through loud and clear.

“Major Emitrome is going to be my examiner. The good General probably figures he'd make me too nervous. He's right. I just wish Thar was here.”

Widgin followed her to the faucet behind the forward trellis. She filled a container with precious City water and then poured it out at the base of the newly sprouted vine. She caressed a small golden green leaf starting to uncurl and returned the container to its place by the faucet.

“We'd better hurry Widgin, I don't want to be late.”

“Okay, Kaffy. We hurry,” Widgin said wiggling a suction-cupped finger at the new leaf.

They left the dome via the Frozene tunnels. Kathy had gotten use to the misty dark corridors and the echoes of their footsteps whenever they descended into his world.

“Kaffy like Tharinon Colonel, yes?” Widgin asked.

His flippers echoed in the twilight of the narrow passageway. Up ahead in the dimly lit corridor between the living quarters and the City’s bulkhead was the long ladder leading down to Pimmnidiat's private level below the General's. Both levels had high security monitors, but Widgin had a proven knack for getting through just about any kind of security device there was without being detected. However, since Tammaru knew that her little friend frequented the old dome she doubted that he got through all sensors without being detected.

“Yeah, I kind of like him Widgin,” she admitted watching him disappear down the ladder. She turned and stepped down after him trying to keep the squeaks and groans of the old metal to a minimum. There were no lift tubes in the upper region of the City's sub-flooring. One dim light shone in the distance as Kathy stepped off at the bottom. A tube junction was just ahead.
